AGM 2022 Proposal: to remove “2018” from the club logo

Post by ClaptonCFC »

Members are asked to support removing “2018” from the club logo and phasing out the use of the current logo in the production of future merchandise, eventually removing it completely when new kit is ordered for our teams next season.
The updated club badge will therefore look like this:

Why is this important?

The requirement to change our kit and our logo as the result of a court case this summer was a difficult moment for many members, especially as we were forced to make a decision quickly.

Members chose a new logo that was as close as possible to our previous one. However, since then the inclusion of “2018” on it has been a point of contention for some members who were involved from the very beginning in setting up the club.

There was no requirement within the terms of the agreement reached to settle the court case to include a year in our logo. We have a statement on our website that fulfils the requirements of the agreement.

While it is certainly true that Clapton Community FC was formally registered as a community benefit society in 2018 and played its first matches in this capacity that year, it unquestionably existed before then, even if under its former name.

It is important to remember that if the club had not existed before 2018, it is unlikely we would now own the Old Spotted Dog Ground. There would have been no “Clapton Supporters Action Fund” that raised over £6000 to support the legal costs for the Life Members injunction in April 2017, which prevented the liquidation of the charity that previously leased it.

Equally if the club had not existed before 2018, it is unlikely we would have been able to even consider the purchase of the warehouse next to the ground.

The only reason we were offered it at a price we could realistically afford is because the warehouse is registered with Newham Council as an Asset of Community Value – a process that was set in motion at the club’s AGM on 2 July 2016 (and was moved and seconded, coincidentally, by the club’s current Treasurer and league Representative respectively).

Whilst fully accepting that we have no relationship to any club that previously played at the Old Spotted Dog Ground, we all instinctively know why returning to it mattered to us.

As much of the work that made this possible happened before the year that appears on our logo, its continued presence is misleading and, at least for some members, disrespectful of the efforts that helped to set up the club in the first place.

As it has only been five months since the new logo was adopted, now is the ideal moment to correct that mistake.
What are the risks?

Any change includes a financial risk if it means replacing the logo on merchandise and kit, so this proposal suggests a pragmatic approach of phasing in the change on any new merchandise ordered after the date of the AGM and aiming to complete the change by the end of the 2022-23 season.

Teams will continue to play with what becomes the “2018 interim” logo until we order any new kit at the start of the next season.

Reluctantly, it is accepted that the same would apply to this year’s membership badges and cards.

If this proposal is agreed, other changes – including on the website, programmes, social media and other publicity – would happen as soon as is practically possible, but no later than the end of February 2023.

Why is the ‘2018’ logo still being used on social media etc? I thought this proposal was carried?
